Panch Prana in Yoga and Ayurveda (The Five Vital Airs/Life Forces)

In yogic philosophy and Ayurveda, "Prana" refers to the vital life force or energy that permeates the body. "Panch Prana" refers to the five primary types or functions of this vital energy, also known as the five Vayus (winds or airs). They govern different physiological and energetic functions within the body. Balancing these five Pranas is considered essential for physical and mental health.

The five Pranas are:

 * Prana Vayu:

   * Location: Primarily in the head, lungs, and heart region.

   * Function: Governs inhalation, reception (of air, food, senses, thoughts), and forward/inward motion. It's the fundamental energy.

 * Apana Vayu:

   * Location: Below the navel, in the pelvic region.

   * Function: Governs elimination (excretion, urination, menstruation, ejaculation), downward and outward movement. It grounds energy.

 * Samana Vayu:

   * Location: Between the navel and the diaphragm (solar plexus area).

   * Function: Governs digestion, assimilation, absorption, and metabolism (processing food, air, experiences). It creates balance and heat.

 * Udana Vayu:

   * Location: Throat and head region.

   * Function: Governs speech, expression, exhalation, growth, upward movement (e.g., standing up), willpower, and connects the physical to the spiritual realms.

 * Vyana Vayu:

   * Location: Pervades the entire body.

   * Function: Governs circulation (of blood, lymph, energy), coordination, movement of limbs and joints, and holds the body together. It integrates and distributes energy.

1. Prāna (Life force in the chest, heart, lungs)

“Breath of heaven, river of skies,

Flow through my heart where spirit flies.

Open my chest to the songs of the stars,

Prāna, sweet dancer between near and far.”

2. Apāna (Downward energy, elimination)

“Root of the mountains, anchor below,

You hold the seed from which dreams grow.

Apāna, fierce keeper of earth and bone,

Ground me, release me, carry me home.”

3. Samāna (Equalizing energy, digestion, assimilation)

“Fire in the belly, forge of gold,

You blend the new with wisdom old.

Samāna, balancing tides within,

Where outer and inner worlds begin.”

4. Udāna (Upward energy, speech, expression)

“Voice of the soul, a song in flight,

You lift the mind toward endless light.

Udāna, breath of purest sound,

Carry my spirit where dreams are found.”

5. Vyāna (Expansive energy, circulation)

“River of stars through body’s streams,

You weave the fabric of silent dreams.

Vyāna, vast ocean of endless span,

Pulse of the cosmos within mortal man.”
